Criterion Based Assessment

Student assessment is criterion based and measures student performance within criteria against specified standards.

Criteria

The criteria separate the knowledge, skills and competencies that are contained within courses that students are expected to acquire through their study. Criteria are linked to objectives.

The criteria for courses developed before 2007 included a number of TCE generic criteria chosen from the following list and which describes the degree to which a person can:

  • collect and categorise information;
  • communicate ideas and information;
  • plan, organise and complete activities;
  • work constructively with others;
  • use mathematical skills and techniques;
  • examine and resolve issues; and
  • select and use technologies.

The total number of criteria required for each course design time is as follows:

A syllabus 6 criteria
B syllabus 8 criteria
C syllabus 10 criteria

For subjects with an external assessment component, 40 to 60% of the criteria are assessed externally.
