The Australian curriculum in NSW

A message from the President of the Board of Studies NSW

NSW has joined with the Australian Government and all other states and territories in a joint endeavour to develop an Australian curriculum, initially for English, mathematics, science and history.

Responsibility for the development of the Australian curriculum is carried by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA). The Board of Studies NSW continues to be responsible for advising the NSW Minister for Education and Training on the appropriateness of curriculum for NSW schools and the structure and process of its implementation, including with regard to the Australian curriculum.

As part of this responsibility the Board will conduct consultations on the draft Australian curriculum and its implementation. System authorities, school associations and professional bodies are also likely to undertake a level of consultation to inform their own position.

The Australian curriculum in the areas of English, mathematics, science and history will be available for implementation from 2011. The phases and details of the implementation process in NSW will be substantially informed by this consultation process.

I encourage those with an interest in contributing to the national curriculum to attend consultation meetings or contribute through the online survey.
