Band 6  (16.66%)
Maintains effective and appropriate oral communication through the exchange of relevant information, opinions and ideas with occasional hesitations and minor inaccuracies. Manipulates Chinese authentically, demonstrating an excellent knowledge and control of vocabulary, prescribed Chinese characters, idiom, grammar and language structures. Creates cohesive texts through the effective structuring and sequencing of ideas and information for a particular audience, purpose and context. Demonstrates consistent, appropriate use of the conventions of register and text type. Demonstrates an excellent understanding of the overall meaning of a broad range of spoken and written texts as well as identifying details in texts. Recognises and reads prescribed Hanyu pinyin fluently.
Band 5  (50.00%)
Maintains effective and appropriate oral communication through the exchange of relevant information, opinions and ideas but with occasional hesitations and errors. Manipulates Chinese competently, demonstrating a thorough knowledge and control of vocabulary, prescribed Chinese characters, idiom, grammar and language structures. Demonstrates the consistent ability to structure and sequence ideas and information effectively in texts for a particular audience, purpose and context. Demonstrates appropriate use of the conventions of register and text type. Demonstrates an overall understanding of a range of spoken and written texts as well as identifying most relevant detail. Recognises and reads prescribed Hanyu pinyin with occasional errors and hesitation.
Band 4  (22.22%)
Maintains appropriate oral communication despite errors in grammar and pronunciation and some hesitation. Demonstrates the use of a range of vocabulary and language structures and a satisfactory knowledge of prescribed Chinese characters to communicate effectively. Demonstrates the ability to organise and express ideas and information with some weaknesses in structure and sequencing. Generally observes the conventions of register and text type. Demonstrates some overall understanding of spoken and written texts with the ability to identify some detail. Demonstrates some ability to read prescribed Hanyu pinyin satisfactorily.
Band 3  (11.11%)
Communicates some information and ideas with extensive pauses and some errors in grammar and pronunciation. Communicates some ideas using simple structures with some reliance on English syntax, resulting in grammatical inaccuracies. Demonstrates a basic knowledge of prescribed Chinese characters. Presents some coherently linked ideas. Displays a basic grasp of the conventions of register and text type. Demonstrates a basic understanding of the main ideas in spoken and written texts but does not always identify relevant detail accurately. Reads prescribed Hanyu pinyin with frequent mispronunciation.
Band 2
Communicates a limited range of information and ideas with frequent hesitations and errors in pronunciation. Attempts to write some of the prescribed Chinese characters, but with errors. Demonstrates an elementary knowledge and understanding of vocabulary and syntax. Displays limited skills in linking ideas. Demonstrates isolated evidence of the use of the conventions of register and text type. Identifies isolated detail and/or single words in spoken and written texts. Attempts to read prescribed Hanyu pinyin with hesitation and significant and frequent error.

A mark in this band indicates that the student has achieved below the minimum standard expected.
