What employment skills do students gain?

The School Certificate tests assess the foundation knowledge and skills identified as necessary for students undertaking further study or entering the workplace. These skills not only assist students to gain employment but also to achieve their potential and contribute successfully to the workplace.

The cross-curriculum content incorporated in all Years 7-10 syllabuses ensures that students who have been awarded a School Certificate have attained a required standard in literacy, numeracy, and information and communication technologies. They have also demonstrated the following key competencies:

  • Analysing and evaluating information
  • Making appropriate use of technology
  • Evaluating arguments
  • Critically assessing the ideas and opinions of others
  • Expression of students' own ideas and arguments
  • Problem-solving

Further information, including attendance details and attitude towards study, may be contained in the documents issued by the student's school. These usually include school reports, references and documents relating to work experience and community involvement.

How old does a student have to be to leave school?

The school leaving age in New South Wales is 15 years.

Students must stay at school until the final day of Year 10 to be eligible for the School Certificate.
