Background – ENCORE and HSC Music
The HSC music subjects comprise a practical and examination component. Requirements in these subjects can vary from year to year.
ENCORE is a program of outstanding performances and compositions by students from the Higher School Certificate Music examinations. Music syllabuses for the Higher School Certificate offer students opportunities to develop musical knowledge, skills and understanding and to become adept at performing and composing in a variety of styles and genres.
ENCORE also recognises the exemplary work in musicology electives. Students in the Music 2 and Music Extension courses who underake musicology electives are required to submit a prepared essay as part of the HSC examination. Students of Music 1 undertaking musicology as an elective are required to present a ten-minute viva voce (discussion) with the examiners at the time of their practical examinations. The exemplary students are recognised in the ENCORE program.
