2002 HSC Ancient History Update

Changes in the 2002 Ancient History Examination Paper

In the Ancient History HSC examination, students must answer four questions. They must answer a question from each of Sections I, II and III. They must then choose an additional question from either Historical Periods or Ancient Societies in Section IV.

Students are not permitted to answer two questions on the same Historical Period or Ancient Society.

Some changes have been made to the 2002 examination paper to assist students in working through the paper and identifying the questions relating to the options they have studied. The layout of the paper has been changed and instructions have been slightly reworded to clarify their meaning.

The changes are as follows:

  • Each section of the paper is now in a separate booklet, and Section IV is in two booklets – one for Historical Periods and one for Ancient Societies. This allows students to more easily find and compare the different questions on each option.
  • Each section now has a contents page, listing the questions and options in the section, and showing the number of the page on which each question appears. For example

  • Instructions for Section IV above have been amended to more clearly indicate that Questions 45–63 relate to the Additional Historical Period, and Questions 64–76 relate to the Additional Ancient Society.

  • In Section IV, students are reminded that they must attempt a question on an Ancient Society OR an Historical Period that is different from the Ancient Society they chose in Section II or the Historical Period they chose in Section III.
  • The Section II Answer Booklet is now attached to the back of the Section II Question Booklet.
  • An instruction has been added at the start of Section II and Section III, reminding students of the requirements for answering correct combinations of questions (see below).
