2014 Notes from the Marking Centre – Entertainment Industry
Introduction
This document has been produced for the teachers and candidates of the Stage 6 Entertainment Industry course. It contains comments on candidate responses to the 2014 Higher School Certificate examination, highlighting their strengths in particular parts of the examination and indicating where candidates need to improve.

Section II
Candidates showed strength in these areas:
- outlining the information required prior to installing a portable stage (Q.16 (a))
- explaining the advantages and disadvantages of using portable staging for an outdoor event (Q.16 (b))
- demonstrating knowledge of cabling used in vision systems (Q.17 (a))
- understanding the purpose of role statements and the importance of team members fulfilling their role (Q.18 (a) and (b))
- outlining the consequences of poor maintenance of stage lighting equipment for both employees and employers (Q.19)
- demonstrating understanding of the components of sound systems (Q.20 (a))
- using relevant industry terminology and workplace examples.
Candidates need to improve in these areas:
- knowledge of specific vision equipment required for a large-scale outdoor event (Q.17 (b))
- explaining how to conduct a meeting with a crew member (Q.18 (c))
- identifying audio faults and procedures for rectifying problems (Q.20 (b))
- addressing all elements of the question or scenario.
Section III
Question 21
Candidates showed strength in these areas:
- describing technical requirements in detail, including the naming of relevant equipment and how it is used in relation to the context of the scenario of a trade show
- linking relevant safety legislation to the trade show context
- addressing the requirements of keynote speakers on the main stage
- using diagrams to demonstrate their understanding of the events context.
Candidates need to improve in these areas:
- increasing their exposure to a broad range of entertainment industry contexts
- demonstrating a balanced understanding of all the technical areas (audio, lighting, staging and vision)
- using work placement examples that are appropriate to the question
- using industry terminology.
Section IV
Question 22
Candidates showed strength in these areas:
- understanding the need for management strategies to reconfigure the New Year’s Eve event to suit the weather, rather than moving or cancelling the event
- demonstrating knowledge of internal and external customers with relevant examples
- justifying communication methods within the context, including the use of new technology, eg Facebook, Twitter, phone apps
- providing relevant workplace examples and using appropriate industry terminology.
Candidates need to improve in these areas:
- consideration of the various types of performances to be included
- describing how to manage the changes
- consideration of the range of extreme weather conditions rather than just rain
- distinguishing between internal and external customers.
