2014 Notes from the Marking Centre – Primary Industries

Introduction

This document has been produced for the teachers and candidates of the Stage 6 Primary Industries course. It contains comments on candidate responses to the 2014 Higher School Certificate examination, highlighting their strengths in particular parts of the examination and indicating where candidates need to improve.

This document should be read along with:

Section II

Candidates showed strength in these areas:

  • outlining a work plan for livestock activities (Q.16 (a))
  • demonstrating understanding of the rights and responsibilities of employees (Q.16 (b))
  • naming two sources of workplace conflict (Q.17 (a))
  • describing a method of resolving workplace conflict (Q.17 (b))
  • identifying the consequences of inappropriate behaviour (Q.17 (c))
  • naming a current environmental issue (Q.18 (a))
  • identifying an example of an alternative to chemicals for pest management (Q.19 (a) (i))
  • identifying an advantage and a disadvantage of the identified alternative (Q.19 (a) (ii))
  • knowing the importance of recording chemical use (Q.19 (c)).

Candidates need to improve in these areas:

  • linking work activities to the weather conditions (Q.16 (a))
  • justifying their responses (Q.16 (b))
  • providing the characteristics or features for a method of resolution (Q.17 (b))
  • explaining the consequences of inappropriate behaviour (Q.17 (c))
  • understanding the role of a government agency in ensuring compliance with environmental legislation (Q.18 (b))
  • understanding the meaning of the term compliance (Q.18 (c))
  • understanding what is meant by re-entry period (Q.19 (b))
  • knowing the importance of reporting chemical use (Q.19 (c)).

Section III

Question 20

Candidates showed strength in these areas:

  • listing features of a label
  • identifying hazards
  • linking basic safety aspects to the relevant tasks.

Candidates need to improve in these areas:

  • knowing what information is contained in material safety data sheets (MSDS) and on a chemical label
  • explaining safe work practices
  • showing the links between MSDS, label and hazard identification and risk analysis
  • distinguishing between an MSDS and a chemical register
  • providing a detailed response with a greater use of industry terminology.

Section IV

Candidates showed strength in these areas:

  • describing a livestock identification technique (Q.21 (a))
  • describing a characteristic of a plant (Q.22 (a))
  • explaining the importance of keeping records in relation to animal health or plant pests, diseases and disorders (Q.21 (b) and Q.22 (b))
  • providing examples of diseases in a range of livestock or plant industries (Q.21 (c) and Q.22 (c)).

Candidates need to improve in these areas:

  • using accurate terminology
  • stating the implications of poor record keeping on animal health or plant pests, diseases and disorders (Q.21 (b) and Q.22 (b))
  • addressing all aspects of the question and providing specific details in examples used.
