2015 Notes from the Marking Centre – Heritage Chinese

Introduction

This document has been produced for the teachers and candidates of the Stage 6 Heritage Chinese course. It contains comments on candidate responses to the 2015 Higher School Certificate examination, indicating the quality of the responses and highlighting their relative strengths and weaknesses.
This document should be read along with:

Oral examination

Characteristics of better responses:

  • research had depth and breadth and included relevant elaboration
  • sources were used to present in-depth, logical and critical analyses
  • a critical and perceptive reflection on the issues discussed was provided
  • pronunciation and intonation were clear, accurate and fluent
  • sophisticated vocabulary and sentence structures were used.

Characteristics of weaker responses:

  • general or peripheral discussions were presented without in-depth analyses
  • contradictory or repetitive responses were presented
  • no or little evidence of research was presented
  • no connection was made between the chosen topic and the resources used
  • a limited range of vocabulary and sentence structures were used.

Written examination

Section I – Responding to texts

Characteristics of better responses:

  • sufficient and relevant textual references were used to support opinions
  • the ability to synthesise, compare and contrast opinions in texts was demonstrated
  • a perceptive understanding of various issues raised in texts was demonstrated
  • the knowledge of how language features are used to enhance communication was demonstrated.

Characteristics of weaker responses:

  • information from the texts was translated or copied
  • partial information from the texts was used to answer questions
  • candidates did not respond to the requirements of the questions or demonstrated limited understanding of the texts
  • no connection between the answers and the related issues was made
  • the requirements of the text types were not met.

Section II – Creating text in Chinese

Characteristics of better responses:

  • a variety of vocabulary and expressions were used
  • a coherent discussion using correct text types was provided
  • candidates displayed logical thinking and analytical skills in their elaboration
  • a perceptive understanding of the topics and related issues was demonstrated
  • candidates demonstrated a perceptive understanding of the dilemma for young people of Chinese heritage who are caught between the cultural expectations of Chinese parents and the lure of society.

Characteristics of weaker responses:

  • the requirements of the topics were misunderstood
  • topics were not discussed in depth
  • ideas and opinions were not expressed clearly
  • the wrong text types were used
  • poor control of vocabulary and sentence structures was demonstrated.
