2015 Notes from the Marking Centre – Croatian Continuers

Introduction

This document has been produced for the teachers and candidates of the Stage 6 Croatian Continuers course. It contains comments on candidate responses to the 2015 Higher School Certificate examination, indicating the quality of the responses and highlighting their relative strengths and weaknesses.
This document should be read along with:

Oral examination

Section I – Conversation

Characteristics of better responses:

  • language was manipulated appropriately and detailed responses were provided
  • appropriate vocabulary and a variety of language structures correctly were used.

Characteristics of weaker responses:

  • incorrect sentence structure, verb conjugation and limited and/or incorrect use of prepositions were used
  • brief responses were provided that did not use a variety of vocabulary
  • language was not manipulated consistently
  • English vocabulary and/or sentence structures were included.

Section II – Discussion

Characteristics of better responses:

  • the topic for the in-depth study was well researched
  • evidence of the appropriate number of research texts was provided
  •  a clear link was made between the in-depth topic and the texts researched
  • opinions and ideas were justified using appropriate vocabulary.

Characteristics of weaker responses:

  • little or no evidence of research was apparent
  • a literary text was not used
  • superficial reference to the texts was made
  • simple grammatical structures and vocabulary were used
  • language was not manipulated to respond to the question asked.

Section I – Listening and Responding

Part A

Characteristics of better responses:

  • a good understanding was demonstrated by including all details required to answer the question
  • insightful comments regarding the use of language in the context of the texts were made
  • an opinion or point of view was analysed or justified.

Characteristics of weaker responses:

  • relevant details needed to respond to the question correctly were omitted
  • the text was simply translated or re-told
  • responses were not supported with contextual examples
  • language was not linked to context and content.

Part B

Characteristics of better responses:

  • an inference was made from the information given
  • aspects of the question were addressed
  • information was analysed and appropriate conclusions made.

Characteristics of weaker responses:

  • key words in the question were missed
  • the content of the text was re-told
  • details were listed without answering the question
  • an understanding of specific aspects of the text was not demonstrated
  • an opinion or point of view was not justified.

 Section II – Reading and Responding

Part A

Characteristics of better responses:

  • all relevant details required to answer the question were included
  • appropriate textual references to support a point of view were included.

Characteristics of weaker responses:

  • the content of the text was translated and re-told rather than answering the question
  • appropriate content and language was not included
  • language techniques were not identified
  • appropriate supporting quotes from the text were not included
  • meaning was not inferred from the text.

Part B

Characteristics of better responses:

  • a good understanding of the text was demonstrated
  • language was creatively and authentically manipulated to meet the requirements of the question.

Characteristics of weaker responses:

  •  key elements of the text were omitted
  • a variety of vocabulary and grammatical structures was not used.

Section III – Writing in Croatian

Characteristics of better responses:

  • the correct text type was used and the response contained depth and breadth
  • language was manipulated creatively and authentically to meet the requirements of the question
  • knowledge of a variety of vocabulary and correct grammar structures was demonstrated
  • sentences were sequenced and structured coherently and effectively.

Characteristics of weaker responses:

  • a limited range of vocabulary was used
  • grammatical inaccuracies were included and sentence structure was not coherent
  • a limited range of ideas and information was presented.
