2015 Notes from the Marking Centre – Heritage Indonesian
Introduction
This document has been produced for the teachers and candidates of the Stage 6 Heritage Indonesian course. It contains comments on candidate responses to the 2015 Higher School Certificate examination, indicating the quality of the responses and highlighting their relative strengths and weaknesses.

Section I – Responding to texts
Questions 1–2
Characteristics of better responses:
- candidates demonstrated perceptive understanding of the content of the texts
- information from both texts was synthesised (Q2)
- extensive knowledge and control of language structures and vocabulary that was appropriate to the context, purpose and audience was shown (Q2).
Question 3
Characteristics of better responses:
- reference was made to both the content and the language used
- a comprehensive understanding of the text was demonstrated
- candidates showed skill in inferring views and attitudes.
Question 4
Characteristics of better responses:
- a perceptive understanding of the text was shown
- an excellent and effective command of English was demonstrated.
Question 5
Characteristics of better responses:
- candidates demonstrated a perceptive understanding of the text
- language was manipulated competently
- candidates responded concisely to all the concerns raised in the letter.
Question 6
Characteristics of better responses:
- candidates used appropriate Indonesian
- responses showed a perceptive understanding of the issues raised in the blog
- a sophisticated level of ability to infer values, beliefs, practices and attitudes in the text was demonstrated.
Question 7
Characteristics of better responses:
- candidates demonstrated a perceptive understanding of the short story
- responses were well-referenced
- reference was made to complex cultural attitudes.
Section II – Creating texts in Indonesian
Characteristics of better responses:
- an excellent control of a range of language structures and vocabulary relevant to the chosen question was demonstrated
- the register appropriate to the audience, purpose and context was selected
- candidates demonstrated a coherent and effective structuring and sequencing of the advice being offered (Q9).
