Technology (Mandatory) Stage 4
Syllabus links Opportunities for learning

Objective

Students will develop:

3. knowledge and understanding of and skills in the responsible selection and safe use of materials, tools and techniques

Outcome

A student:

4.3.2 demonstrates responsible and safe use of a range of tools, materials and techniques in each design project

Students learn about:

  • responsible behaviour in working environments
  • Occupational Health and Safety practices
  • the safe and responsible use of materials, tools and techniques in each design project.

Students learn to:

  • manage risk when developing design projects
  • use tools, materials and techniques in a responsible and safe manner in each design project
  • maintain tools and equipment including computer equipment

Through the development of different design projects, students are provided with an opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of and skills in the wise use and responsible selection of a broad range of materials, tools and techniques. In order for students to do this teachers model the appropriate safe work practices that students are to follow. Discussion and examination of government regulations and laws relating to Occupational, Health and Safety is undertaken and how this impacts not only upon the rights and responsibilities of the individual but also those teams both at school and in commercial and industrial settings.

Students are encouraged to experiment and test their design ideas, demonstrating that they are able to work responsibly and safely not only for the betterment of themselves but also for those around them. Safe work practices are an integral part of lessons as students are encouraged to design and then produce their solutions to a range of problems.

Students accept responsibility for the safe and appropriate use of the tools and equipment provided for their use, allowing them to engage in increasingly complex techniques and tasks.

Dimensions of respect and responsibility:

Objective

Students will develop:

4. knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the impact of innovation and emerging technologies on the individual, society and the environment.

Outcome

A student:

4.4.1 explains the impact of innovation and emerging technologies on society and the environment

Students learn about:

  • the impact of innovation and emerging technology on society and the environment

Students learn to:

  • explain the impact of innovations and emerging technologies on society and the environment including new ICTs

Students will learn to respect their environment through an examination of the impact of current and emerging technologies upon it. Innovation and creativity will be explored and discussed in collaborative groups where students develop respect for the opinion of others by allowing them to contribute their ideas and views. They learn to make wise decisions in the selection of the resources they use, accepting responsibility for the consequences of their choices.

Students demonstrate responsibility in the appropriate selection of the materials, tools and techniques nominated for each design project explaining their selection in relation to its impact upon society and the environment. This is undertaken in different areas of study including products, the built environment and information and communication technologies.

Dimensions of respect and responsibility:

Objective

Students will develop:

  1. understanding and appreciation of and skills in evaluating and reflecting on the success of their own and others’ design activities

Outcome

A student:

4.6.2 identifies and explains ethical, social, environmental and sustainability considerations related to design projects

Students learn about:

  • the impact of innovation and emerging technology on society and the environment
  • ethical and responsible design
  • environmental and sustainability considerations

Students learn to:

  • identify ethical, social, and environmental and sustainability considerations relevant to each design project
  • be responsible and ethical in the decisions made in the development and production of each design project
  • explain the responsibilities of designers
  • demonstrate appropriate ethics and etiquette in relation to computer use such as general computer care, passwords, file security, network use, printing and shared resources

Students examine ethical issues in relation to innovation and the development of design ideas such as protection of intellectual property, copyright and plagiarism. Students learn about the concept of responsible design and how as a young designer they have the responsibility to others and future generations to make ethical choices when deciding upon the materials, tools and techniques they will use in each design project.

Students study designers and evaluate the factors designers need to consider when developing design ideas. These factors include the designers’ responsibility to society to develop products, systems and environments that are safe and will benefit the intended user. Students examine the impact of a range of design solutions, and debate the responsibilities of those involved in the development of emerging technologies.

Through their use of information and communication technologies students undertake responsibility to use this technology appropriately ensuring the rights of others are protected, by demonstrating ethical use of the internet and school network systems. Students demonstrate respect for others by implementing appropriate security procedures when using the computer.

Students have the opportunity to reflect of principles of sustainability such as reducing materials used, reusing materials and recycling materials.
