Students learn about:

Students discuss how scientific research has increased understanding of the biosphere and describe examples of how humans’ use of fossil fuel has impacted on the biosphere. They evaluate methods of conserving and protecting Earth’s resources and maintaining the quality and sustainability of the environment.

This provides opportunities for learning experiences to incorporate respect and responsibility as students discuss a range of viewpoints about issues and develop their understanding of how different societal groups use or weight criteria differently to make decisions.

When learning about ecosystems students can investigate environmental management and describe how the land management practices and techniques of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples have changed the environment.

Through their research students can compare a traditional ecological knowledge approach and western science-based management of the environment. This provides opportunities for learning experiences to incorporate respect and responsibility through discussion of how Aboriginal knowledge systems acknowledge responsibility in conserving, protecting and maintaining the environment for future generations.

This provides opportunities for learning experiences to incorporate respect and responsibility as students develop a system of personal values by considering a range of social and ethical views in relation to the positive and negative impacts of this application of science.
