Mathematics Test Scope Statement and Test Specifications from 2006

Central to the Mathematics Years 7–10 Syllabus is the process strand Working Mathematically, which has five interrelated processes: Questioning, Applying Strategies, Communicating, Reasoning, and Reflecting. Students:

  • ask questions in relation to mathematical situations and their mathematical experiences

  • develop, select and use a range of strategies, including the selection and use of appropriate technology, to explore and develop solutions in solving problems

  • develop and use appropriate language and representations to formulate and express mathematical ideas

  • develop and use processes for exploring relationships, checking solutions and giving reasons to support their conclusions

  • reflect on their experiences and critical understanding to make connections with, and generalisations about, existing knowledge and understanding.

There is no specific list of knowledge and skills for this strand. The Working Mathematically processes are embedded in the content strands: Number, Patterns and Algebra, Data, Measurement, Space and Geometry.

The School Certificate Mathematics test will be based on the Working Mathematically strand as it relates to the content strands up to and including Stage 5.1.
