The mother is concerned about what people will think of her son’s appearance. She is afraid he will be criticised by relatives. She is critical of him, his friends and their parents. She views his dyed hair as being negative.
The son wants to be fashionable and be like his friends and does not care about the opinions of others. He sees it as positive and believes that appearance is not important and does not affect his behaviour. He and his friends do well at school.

Hi Bob, Sorry to hear that you are having problems. Maybe you need to look at the differences between Indonesian and Western culture.
It is possible you broke several norms by proposing changes to improve production in the company. Taking orders from above rather is preferable to using your initiative. Perhaps you were perceived as too ambitious and not a team player because you did not consult with your colleagues beforehand. Open conflict should also be avoided. That could be why they said nothing.
Even though people may not look like they are paying attention, they will be because in Indonesian culture maintaining eye contact is considered challenging and rude and being polite is really valued in Indonesian culture.
Good luck with your job.
Yours, Sutandio

Teman-teman, makasih untuk komentarnya, ya. Aku memutuskan untuk nggak nonton Festival Rock On.
Hi guys, Thank you for your comments. I have decided not to go to the Rock On Festival …

It is a pity to hear this all too common misunderstanding between older and younger generations regarding values and manners.
These problems are not easily solved. Maybe both generations need to talk sensibly about the problems. For example, to overcome the complaints of the older generation about the use of colloquial language which sounds rude to them, it is better to use humour than to complain.
Maybe if the older generation treat the young people as more grown-up and respect their privacy, they will then introduce their friends and possibly give more information willingly.
As for helping around the house, the older generation needs to realise the demands of study in this competitive world and the younger generation should help during holidays.

Salam hormat, Yasmin
Dear Mum and Dad,
How are you? Hope you are doing well like I am here. I am sorry to tell you that I am not intending to go home these holidays.
I have just read an article about the threatened extinction of the orang-utan and have spoken to Martin my designer student friend about Orang-utan Awareness Week coming up in July. We both would like to participate. Martin will design a pamphlet and because I am good with language, I will provide the wording.
I hope you will support me in my decision because this issue is not only affecting Indonesia but the whole world. I think you would agree with me that people should be informed that the destruction of the jungle by palm oil plantations and illegal loggers destroys the habitat of the orang-utans. The thing that really upsets me, and I believe you too, is the fact that there is a black market trade in baby orang-utans.
Martin told me that his parents are fully behind him in his participation in this campaign. I promise that I will be coming home for the next holiday.
Thank you for your understanding, and see you soon,
Love, Yasmin
