Information regarding the HSC examination in Personal Development, Health and Physical Education from 2010

Decisions made by the Board of Studies in December 2008 have resulted in changes to some HSC examinations in 2010 and beyond.

In the Personal Development, Health and Physical Education HSC examination in 2010 and beyond:

  • Section I Part A will remain the same
  • Section I Part B will consist of short-answer questions, rather than a combination of short-answer and extended response questions
  • Section II will contain both a short-answer and an extended response question on each of the option topics. Students will attempt both the short-answer and extended response questions on the two options that they have studied.

A sample of short-answer questions based on the core modules is being developed and will be available on the Board’s website during Term 4 2009.

Questions in the 2010 Personal Development, Health and Physical Education HSC examination will contain the same range of item types as in the past. Note that, while Personal Development, Health and Physical Education HSC course structure and course objectives have not changed, the syllabus content has been reduced and updated. See http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/syllabus_hsc/pdf_doc/pdhpe-amendments-guide.pdf for details of these changes. So, while working through past HSC examinations would be a valuable part of a student’s preparation program for the 2010 HSC examination in this course, care should be taken to ensure that past questions are still applicable to the new course. The nature, format and particular emphasis of questions may change from year to year. It is important that students read and respond to the questions in examinations rather than prepare a response to a preconceived idea of what the question will entail.

A sample cover page for the 2010 Personal Development, Health and Physical Education HSC examination (PDF) has been prepared to help illustrate the structure of the examination and the recommended time for each Section.

The Personal Development, Health and Physical Education HSC examination specifications now give guidance on the expected length of extended responses, stated in terms of the approximate number of pages of an examination writing booklet (based on average-sized handwriting) and/or an approximate number of words. Students may write less than or more than what is expected and they will not be penalised. Their responses will be marked on the structure and organisation of responses, the quality of the arguments and explanations, and the relevance of the content to the question asked.

The Board also decided that rubrics be amended (where necessary) to ensure that due emphasis is placed on these qualities in the marking of responses.

More details about the examination, and information about assessment components and weightings are in Assessment and Reporting in Personal Development, Health and Physical Education Stage 6. (PDF, 206 KB)
