This text covers textile artists and fabric decoration.

This text covers topics such as textiles, technology and design,
structures and properties, design and construction, and social significance. Although a junior text, it is directly relevant to the senior course.

This text has concise notes on textiles - fabric, yarn and fibre, construction techniques and processes.

 

Laver, J, A Concise History, Thames & Hudson, 1982, ISBN 0 5002 0190 0

This book covers the history of the processing and manufacturing of textile fibres from early Stone Age to present day technology.

 

Gill, D et al, Style And Design - 100 Years Of Change, Dempsey Parr, 1998, ISBN 1 8408 4028 5

This textbook describes how changes in lifestyle and culture have impacted on design. It is a guidebook to changing images and directions in design, with all aspects of design represented including millinery and theatre.

Video Education Australia, Cutting Their Own Cloth (video, 21 min) 1999

Two enterprising young women turn a lost opportunity into a commercial gain. They set up their own company designing and manufacturing club wear. This video covers setting up the business, design inspiration, the logistics of manufacturing and the design making involved.


Video Education Australia, Stringybark On Screen (video, 20 min), 1998

This is a case study of design and technology at Australia's leading T-shirt maker. The company is small but highly creative and successful and their striking designs are noted for their boldness, creativity and environmental relevance.

This text provides simple but effective ideas for costume design through eras and for a variety of situations. It includes many line drawings of ideas.

This text gives sample plays and character descriptions followed by costuming examples.

A text particularly useful for Fantasy/Historic/Futuristic costumes. It is comprised mainly of colour plates. It is an excellent resource for ideas.


Cassin-Scott, J, The Amateur Dramatics Handbook, Cassell Publishing, 1993, ISBN 0 3043 4358 7

This book provides information about staging a play. Topics include costuming, wigs, props and lighting. Some basic costume patterns are included.

The Whitehouse School of Fashion Design and Interior Decoration, tel 02 9267 8799

The school runs a full-day fashion drawing workshop and provides excellent sample folios of student work and information on trend charts and courses. It also offers one-week free workshop scholarships to talented students who do the one-day workshop.

This video considers how international competition has impacted on the Australian textile industry.

The Australian Fashion Industry magazine. Related issues include: news, fashion trends, designers, retail watch, fibres, legal matters, market places and careers. It is easy to read. The magazine includes an annual directory.


View, quarterly, Europress, McEvoy Street, Alexandria (tel: 9698 4922), $320/year

Used by design schools, it forecasts trends, is colourful and provides technical drawings of design features. Just one year's subscription would assist students with technical drawings and thumbnail sketches.


Textile -- Fibre Forum, three times per year, Australian Forum for Textile Arts, Gordon and Gotch, Queensland

This resource contains information and inspiration in the area of textile arts.

Video Classroom, Unravelling Australia's Denim Wool (video, 20 min), 1997

This program visits Bradmill Textiles in Melbourne to see the very latest trends in the design, manufacture and testing of the durable international fabric, denim. It explores how new fabrics are created, made and tested in a modern Australian textile factory, and in particular, looks at Bradmill's new creation, Denim Wool, a denim that includes 11% wool fibre.
