- Q. Do students undertaking early commencement of VET in Stage 5 have to complete the HSC: All My Own Work program before they start the course?
-
Yes
All students undertaking Preliminary or HSC courses must complete the HSC: All My Own Work program (or its equivalent) before the school submits students’ 2009 Preliminary or HSC course entries. This includes all Stage 5 students undertaking early commencement of a Stage 6 VET course.
Stage 5 students are undertaking early commencement of a Stage 6 VET course if they are undertaking an Industry Curriculum Framework course or any other endorsed Stage 6 VET course (for a list of these courses refer to Stage 6 VET Board Endorsed Course Descriptions for 2009).
Principals are required to certify students’ completion of the HSC: All My Own Work program (or its equivalent) via Schools Online. For students undertaking early commencement of a Stage 6 VET course in 2009 this certification must be completed by Friday 27 February 2009.
For further information refer to the HSC: All My Own Work web page and Official Notice BOS 49/08
- Q. Who can study VET courses in Stage 5?
Access to VET courses by students in Stage 5 should only be an option if it suits students’ individual needs – it is not necessarily appropriate for all schools, or for all students. It should be seen as one strategy within a suite of strategies used by schools to address engagement, retention and participation in education and training.
The support of the relevant school system authority is essential prior to schools offering VET courses to students in Stage 5
For further information and advice, please refer the Guidelines for Access to VET Courses in Stage 5 in 2009.
- Q. What does our school have to do if it wants to offer VET courses to students in Stage 5 in 2010?
-
All schools intending to offer VET courses to Stage 5 students in 2010 must complete a Notification of intention to access VET courses in Stage 5 in 2010 form and send it to the Board of Studies by Friday, 25 September 2009.
- Q. What type of VET curriculum pathways are available for Stage 5 students to study?
There are two VET curriculum pathways for Stage 5 students to access:
- Stage 5 School Certificate Board Endorsed VET courses – credentialled on the School Certificate.
- Early commencement of Stage 6 VET courses – credentialled on the Higher School Certificate
- Q. How do I enter my Year 9 students who are doing a School Certificate VET Board Endorsed Course on Schools Online?
To enrol a Year 9 student doing a School Certificate VET Board Endorsed Course on Schools Online schools should complete the following steps:
- create a new ‘School Certificate’ enrolment for the student in the calendar year in which they undertake the course
- when adding the student’s enrolment indicate that the student does not expect to complete the School Certificate Program this year
- enter the student in the course in the usual manner.
At the end of the course the student will receive a copy of the VET credentials that they have achieved and a School Certificate Record of Achievement listing the course. This course will also be listed on subsequent School Certificate Record(s) of Achievement that the student receives.
- Q. Can students start school-based apprenticeships and traineeships in Stage 5?
Yes, students may commence a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship in Stage 5. School-based apprenticeships and traineeships are available to students as part of their HSC pattern of study. Early commencement of a Stage 6 VET course is the appropriate curriculum pathway.
