Registration process for the government schooling system
In 2014, the Education Amendment (Government Schools) Act 2014 amended section 27 of the Education Act 1990 to enable the BOSTES, with the assistance of the Department of Education and Communities (DEC), to provide advice to the Minister for Education on the compliance by NSW government schools with requirements similar to those necessary for the registration of non-government schools.
The Department’s processes, policies and procedures for monitoring the compliance of NSW government schools with registration requirements are subject to an external quality assurance process by the BOSTES. This includes a review of relevant system documentation and inspections of a small sample of government schools annually.
A process and criteria for the annual selection of the sample of government schools has been developed. This will ensure that over a five year period, the schools selected will be representative of the diversity of government schools in relation to characteristics such as Years of schooling, regional and metropolitan location, and type of school.
The BOSTES and the Department will continue to consult on the quality assurance process and the source and nature of documentation necessary to demonstrate policy implementation and compliance with the requirements. The requirements are described in Section 4 of the Registration Process for the NSW Government Schooling System Manual.
The BOSTES’ external quality assurance process will have particular regard to minimising any additional burden on individual schools and on utilising any existing or future Department systems or processes that serve a similar purpose to the BOSTES systems or processes.
