2 unit Korean Beginners
Band 6
Maintains appropriate oral communication in Korean through the exchange of relevant information, opinions and ideas with occasional hesitations and minor inaccuracies. Demonstrates an extensive knowledge and understanding of vocabulary and language structures including the appropriate use of sino and pure Korean numbers. Demonstrates the ability to organise and link ideas coherently with a number of conjunctions, such as kurigo, hajiman, kurunde. Demonstrates consistent, appropriate use of the conventions of register and text type. Demonstrates an excellent understanding of the overall meaning of a broad range of spoken and written texts as well as identifying detail in texts.
Band 5
Maintains appropriate oral communication in Korean through the exchange of relevant information, opinions and ideas but with occasional hesitations and errors. Demonstrates a sound knowledge of vocabulary and language structures including the appropriate use of sino and pure Korean numbers but with occasional errors. Organises and expresses ideas coherently with occasional use of conjunctions. Demonstrates some understanding of the conventions of register and text type. Demonstrates an overall understanding of a range of spoken and written texts as well as identifying most relevant detail.
Band 4
Maintains appropriate oral communication in Korean despite errors in grammar and pronunciation and some hesitation. Demonstrates a satisfactory knowledge of vocabulary and language structures but with some incorrect use of sino and pure Korean numbers. Demonstrates the ability to organise and express ideas and information with some weaknesses in structure and sequencing. Generally observes the conventions of register and text type. Demonstrates some overall understanding of spoken and written texts with the ability to identify some detail.
Band 3
Communicates some ideas and information in Korean with extensive pauses and some errors in grammar and pronunciation. Demonstrates an understanding of basic vocabulary and familiar language structures with errors in the use of sino and pure Korean numbers, spelling, grammar and syntax, and with evidence of the influence of English syntax and vocabulary. Displays a basic grasp of the conventions of register and text type. Demonstrates a basic understanding of the main ideas in spoken and written texts but does not always identify relevant detail accurately. Produces written responses using simple language structures which may be below minimum length.
Band 2
Communicates a limited range of ideas and information in Korean using single words and set formulae with frequent hesitations and errors in pronunciation. Applies a limited vocabulary and a limited range of expressions to communicate in Korean with errors in spelling, grammar and syntax, and with significant evidence of the influence of English syntax and vocabulary. Demonstrates isolated evidence of the use of the conventions of register and text type. Identifies isolated detail and/or single words in spoken and written texts. Produces written responses often significantly below minimum length.
Band 1
A mark in this band indicates that the student has achieved below the minimum standard expected.
