Initiates and sustains conversation through the exchange of relevant information and ideas with some use of anglicisms, some hesitation and repetition, and occasional errors of pronunciation and intonation which do not impede communication. Demonstrates an excellent knowledge and understanding of the language structures, vocabulary, grammar, idiom and syntax including the appropriate use of sino and pure Korean numbers and honorifics. Demonstrates some ability to manipulate language creatively and to organise and link ideas logically and coherently. Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of overall meaning as well as identifying specific detail by summarising, interpreting and evaluating information and ideas of written and spoken texts. Demonstrates a good understanding and command of register and the conventions of text types.
Band 5

Sustains conversation through the exchange of relevant information and ideas with some use of anglicisms, some hesitation and repetition, and occasional errors of pronunciation and intonation. Demonstrates a sound knowledge and understanding of the language structures, vocabulary, grammar, idiom and syntax including the appropriate use of sino and pure Korean numbers and honorifics, but with some errors that do not impede communication. Conveys meaning in spite of some inadequacies in organisation and/or sequencing of ideas and information. Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the overall meaning as well as identifying some relevant details of written and spoken texts. Demonstrates some understanding of register and the conventions of text types.

Maintains a conversation through the exchange of information and ideas but with some prompting and paraphrasing of questions, with some use of anglicisms, and with errors in the use of verb-ending and in pronunciation. Demonstrates a satisfactory understanding and knowledge of simple language structures, vocabulary, grammar and syntax but with some incorrect use of sino and pure Korean numbers and honorifics. Demonstrates a sound understanding of the overall meaning as well as identifying some relevant details of written and spoken texts. Demonstrates the ability to organise and express basic ideas with frequent weaknesses in sequencing and/or linking. Demonstrates some understanding of the conventions of text types.
Band 3
(5%)

Maintains a conversation with extensive prompting and rephrasing. Demonstrates a limited knowledge and understanding of vocabulary, grammar and syntax with little correct use of sino and pure Korean numbers and honorifics. Shows evidence of the appropriate use of simple language structures but with some errors in grammar and verb-endings and some influence of English syntax. Demonstrates a basic understanding of the overall meaning as well as identifying some detail of written and spoken texts. Demonstrates an elementary grasp of the sequencing of ideas and the conventions of text types. Produces written responses that may be below minimum length.
Band 2

Communicates orally using single words and set formulae with some utterances irrelevant. Demonstrates an elementary knowledge and understanding of vocabulary and syntax. Demonstrates an ability to write simple sentences and use basic linguistic expression. Identifies isolated minor detail, which is not necessarily relevant. Shows minimal evidence of the sequencing of ideas and the conventions of text types. Produces written responses often significantly below minimum length.
