2013 Notes from the Marking Centre – Metal and Engineering

Introduction

This document has been produced for the teachers and candidates of the Stage 6 Metal and Engineering course. It contains comments on candidate responses to the 2013 Higher School Certificate examination, highlighting their strengths in particular parts of the examination and indicating where candidates need to improve.

This document should be read along with:

Section II

Candidates showed strength in these areas:

  • understanding pictorial drawings and their purpose (Q.16)
  • proposing a sequence of steps to mark out an item (Q.17)
  • explaining the important features to be considered when selecting a file (Q.18)
  • outlining the advantage of each drill chuck type (Q.18).

Candidates need to improve in these areas:

  • identifying drawing symbols such as the datum symbol (Q.16)
  • understanding detail drawings and their purpose (Q.16)
  • proposing a sequence of steps to manufacture an item (Q.17)
  • explaining the importance of consulting an MSDS (Q.17)
  • identifying and describing the use of a file (Q.18).

Section III

Candidates showed strength in these areas:

  • structuring the response in a logical and cohesive manner
  • describing the role of government in preventing bullying, harassment and discrimination.

Candidates need to improve in these areas:

  • describing the roles of all of the stakeholders mentioned in the question
  • describing the roles of the various stakeholders in preventing unfair access to opportunities
  • identifying differences in the roles of each of the five stakeholders.

Section IV

Candidates showed strength in these areas:

  • providing strategies for the prevention of injuries
  • linking some elements of effective storage systems to organisational efficiency
  • linking some elements of effective storage systems to safe work environments.

Candidates need to improve in these areas:

  • describing a broader range of the benefits of an efficient storage system
  • providing a more detailed description of the benefits of a safe storage system.
