2013 Notes from the Marking Centre – Primary Industries

Introduction

This document has been produced for the teachers and candidates of the Stage 6 Primary Industries course. It contains comments on candidate responses to the 2013 Higher School Certificate examination, highlighting their strengths in particular parts of the examination and indicating where candidates need to improve.

This document should be read along with:

Section II

Candidates showed strength in these areas:

  • naming two electronic devices and giving two valid reasons for the directive (Q.16)
  • outlining at least one emerging technology (Q.16)
  • recognising potential implications of weather patterns and providing actions to minimise effects on staff work programs (Q.17)
  • identifying risk control measures (Q.18)
  • providing many pre-operational and safety checks for spraying chemicals (Q.19).

Candidates need to improve in these areas:

  • recognising features of a water map and interpreting given information (Q.17)
  • recognising the difference between a hazard and a risk, giving specific and appropriate examples
  • evaluating a range of risk control measures (Q.18)
  • developing a safe work procedure for using a piece of chemical application equipment that includes mixing and applying chemicals, post-application procedures, record keeping, as well as pre-operational and safety checks (Q.19).

Section III

Candidates showed strength in these areas:

  • listing some resources
  • providing basic strategies to improve resource use
  • providing some simplistic form of monitoring resource use
  • providing examples from relevant work placements.

Candidates need to improve in these areas:

  • addressing all components of the question (identify, analyse strategies and measure/monitor)
  • clearly naming the resources and including detailed information on strategies to improve efficient use
  • analysing strategies, ie drawing out implications.

Section IV

Candidates showed strength in these areas:

  • identifying two parasites/pests and some symptoms
  • identifying one step in a process
  • providing general symptoms of parasite/pest infestation.

Candidates need to improve in these areas:

  • understanding the term ‘process’
  • distinguishing between ‘diseases’ and ‘parasites’
  • distinguishing between ‘discuss’ and ‘describe’
  • analysing prevention/treatment strategies.
